  • Google + and Your Marketing Strategy

From one of my recent posts you might think that I consider social media a time waster but for business owners.  It certainly may be if you do not stay focused and blur the lines between work and play.  But it is becoming increasingly important to become involved in social media if you are a small business owner.  Since social media can take up a considerable amount of time and resources, you need to plan accordingly.  One aspect of planning is to look into the demographics of each social network since there are many social networks and some may better fit your niche than others.

Facebook is probably the best known, and it is the largest social network globally but to my surprise I discovered that based on overall users Google + is the largest US social medic network.  So I will start  a series of posts on the demographics of various social media starting with Google +.

    • Google + has 5 billion Active users (globally) and while not all are active on the network, their presence on the network personalizes their search experience.
    • 26.1% of women and 24.5% of men have a Google+ account.
    • By age globally (from the Dec 10, 2013 Global Web Index Study): 16-24 (20.7%), 25-34 (24.9%), 35-44 (24.9%), 45-54 (17.8%), 55-64 (11.7%)
    • 5 billion photos uploaded each week
    • Most importantly for business owners, Google Plus generates much more brand engagement than you might think. Recently Forrester studied more than 3 million user interactions with more than 2,500 brand posts on seven social networks. Brands Google Plus posts generated nearly as much engagement per follower as their Facebook posts — and almost twice as much engagement per follower as their Twitter posts.

  • Ten Reasons to Be Thankful

What are those who are self-employed grateful for this holiday season?   After putting this question to some friends and to Google, ten general reasons for gratitude stand out.

    1. Doing what they love and if they work exclusively online they can do it from anywhere in the world.
    2. Inspiration and ideas that they can act on.
    3. Flexible hours  and no need to ask for permission.  You can go to the dentist or your child’s soccer game, it’s your decision.
    4. Supportive family and friends
    5. Customers and clients who see the value of what they do.
    6. The chance to make a difference in the world.
    7. Receiving payment for value delivered.
    8. Passive income.
    9. Challenges including being able to learn from your mistakes and building the courage to ask for the sale.
    10. “Technology”  and  ….. everything they cannot live without: the Internet, PayPal, WordPress, Adobe software,  Wikipedia, Skype, Social networks.

  • Why Should You Advertise on YouTube?

If you are running an online business or a business that has an online presence, YouTube is one place where you should be advertising.

Your YouTube video should provide high content information but be non promotional.  The link to your website or squeeze page should be at the end of the video.  If your goal is to increase your list, you should put in a link to your squeeze page and then to your free product or the item that they will be purchasing.   You can occasionally post your advertising videos to YouTube or you can create a channel to show all your videos you have created about your niche.

So a resume writer or career coach might create a channel that offers videos on:  how to write a resume, turn a cover letter into a sales letter, conduct an informational interviews, research companies online, and effectively interview for new positions.

There are several types of videos that you can be produced.

    • How To videos are popular and if you do not want to be seen, your voice can voice over the procedure that you videotape.
    • You can do a PowerPoint with voice over or present FAQs (frequently asked questions)  An FAQ video might include screen shots, PowerPoints, images, or you speaking.
    • You will have to get in front of the camera if you want to give a demonstration.
    • Finally there is the Music and Picture video – a series of pictures concerning your niche with accompanying music.

So if you sell quilts and quilting supplies, you may create a How To video on making a quilted Christmas stocking, a PowerPoint on what to look for in fabrics, an FAQ on the best supplies to purchase, a demonstration of how you assemble a quilted jacket and a Music and Picture video of all the quilt designs that you currently sell.

Producing a quality video (which you do not need to star in) brands you and gives you professional authority.  Potential customers will either hear you or see and hear you.  This builds rapport you’re your potential customers.

There are other good reasons for advertising on YouTube.

    • It is the 3rd most visited website in the world with about 2 billion video views per day.
    • It is much easier to rank a high on YouTube with a video than on Google with a website.
    • YouTube is a community – it has subscribers, friends, likes, comments, share, and views.
    • And maybe the best reason – it is free, passive traffic.
