Side Hustles You Can Start from HOME with Limited Money – Part One

·

Why start a side hustle?  The obvious answer is to earn extra money and that may be the only reason that you want to take on extra work.  The end of unemployment compensation, wanting to purchase a house, concern about retirement savings, the current state of the economy could be your motivation.  But if you have a job and family responsibilities, you want to pick a side hustle that you can do from home on your computer.

And there can be more to it than a need for income.  You may have developed a skill or talent that you want to share and get paid for; you are wondering if you would find another industry more fulfilling, but you are not ready to leave your current career at this time; you already own a small business and your income is unpredictable.  Flexibility and low entry cost is what you are seeking.

If you are creative and have expertise to share, a degree, and some computer savvy, providing digital products, creator content orfreelance writing may be a good fit.   Digital products are intangible, downloadable, or steamtable assets, such as eBooks, courses, templates, and software, that provide instant access to users without physical inventory.   Content creators  create valuable, entertaining, or educational digital assets (videos, articles, art, podcasts), and focus on  expertise, storytelling, specific niches, high-quality production, and building an audience through consistent, useful content.  Freelance Writers write general content, blogs, articles, copywriting, and social media posts for clients and businesses.

If you want to work from home with no or minimum computer use, there are some ideas for you as well.

Freelance Writer

Finally if you are good with words consider becoming a Freelance Writer.  Freelance writing involves creating content for businesses, blogs, websites, and marketing materials. It offers a flexible schedule, lets you work from anywhere, and provides income that scales with your expertise.

Types of freelance writing that pay well often require background education or training and include:

  • Technical and medical writing: Translate complex information into a language people understand. Companies need this badly and pay well for it.
  • SEO copywriting: Help websites show up on search engines with optimized content across multiple channels. Businesses love it because it brings in customers without paying for advertising.
  • Grant writing: Prepare a request for funding for a grant-making organization by demonstrating why the project is important and worthy of support.. When you win them funding, they’re happy to pay you well.
  • Ghostwriting: Write content anonymously for other businesses or entrepreneurs.. From memoirs to speeches, those who can’t write well but need content will pay good money.
  • Academic writing: Formally write educational and scholarly contexts like well-researched arguments, analysis, and information, often following specific citation guidelines. If you have the background knowledge, there’s steady work here.
  • Scriptwriting: Create a written script that outlines the dialogue, actions, and scenes for a video, podcast, resource, or other audio content.. Start with smaller projects, build a portfolio, and rates improve quickly.
  • Financial writing: Write about financial information, analysis, and advice, including creating reports, articles, and documents that explain financial data, market trends, and investment strategies for growth purposes. The more you know about finance, the more valuable your writing becomes.
  • Corporate and legal writing: Create documents (like contracts) that are used in business and legal contexts, characterized by formal tone, precision, and adherence to specific legal and corporate standards. The stakes are high, so the pay matches the responsibility.

To get started, create a portfolio of your best writing samples.  If you need to build up your portfolio consider:

   • writing for free or for lower paying contracts.

   •  writing blog posts and articles.

   • creating sample pieces that showcase your skills in different writing styles and industries.

Active Hustles

For those who want or need to work from home but do not want to be on the computer; here are some possible hustles that won’ tie you to the internet.

Pet Sitting: Care for other’s pets in your home, rather than traveling to their home.  Although you can sit for dogs or cats, there also are birds and exotic pets, usually caged, who cannot be left home alone for long periods of time – think rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs,  hamsters, ferrets, turtles, lizards, snakes.

Tutoring: Teach something you know well to children or adults – academics, a craft, computer skills or cell phone use and apps.

Music lessons: Provide lessons in an instrument in which you excel.

Crafts: Make craft products and sell in-person or online (Etsy) soap, candles, holiday decorations, what do you enjoy making?

Sell Things Before They Are Made: Take orders for custom-made items like crafts, baked goods, or art pieces.‍ This strategy reduces waste since you only make what you know will sell, reducing waste and ensuring you get paid for your efforts.

Not everyone wants their hustle to literally be work from home.  If you already work remotely, you may want to get out of the house.  So, for those who want to go to your hustle,  Side Hustles You Can Start from Home with Limited Money –   Part Two will be coming soon.
